MCKELLEN DIDN’T FEEL the bullet enter his chest. He saw the muzzle flash just before the smoke exhaled from the pistol’s muzzle, coiling around the barrel like a serpent. McKellen’s body went numb, and his legs collapsed beneath him, sending him crashing into a crate. It shattered into splinters beneath his weight.

A shadow crossed over him as Prewitt leaned into view. His smile gone, he tilted his head, saddened. McKellen spit a wad of blood at him but missed.

“Your record will show that you died bravely, Colonel,” Prewitt said. McKellen wanted to tell the little shit to go fuck himself, but his tongue had stopped working. “This was the only way this could end, you know,” Prewitt continued. “Too many eyes on Area 51. Too many reports and documents. Too many officials keeping tabs.” He huffed. “While Washington worries about future monsters and flying saucers, I’m going to save them from themselves.”

Prewitt stepped away from McKellen and climbed onto the train, his figure reduced to a shadow as McKellen’s vision dimmed. “Like I told you before, Colonel, contingencies.”

The train snaked through the tunnel, vanishing in a billow of steam. Reverberations from the thundering movement rippled across the floor while McKellen lay there, bleeding.

So this is how it ends, he thought. Done in by a bureaucrat. Laughter turned to coughing. Blood dribbled over his lips and mustache. Twisting his head, he found Davis’s dead eyes staring back, wide and full of surprise. At least I’m not alone, McKellen thought.

When the noise of the train melted away in the darkness, a new sound revealed itself. Chains turning, gears grinding. Behind him, the ship’s platform was rising.

As he struggled to roll onto his belly, fire burst through his chest, igniting further with every inch of movement. After what seemed like an eternity of pain, he flopped over just in time to see the dark shape emerge into view.

The ship’s once broken and fractured hull was now smooth. Its split ends and jagged lines were now curved and gleaming. It was so immense that McKellen could only see a sliver of the top of the thing, and yet he knew immediately that it could never be allowed to leave. Prewitt had been right about that much at least.

McKellen’s eyes traced the edge of the emerging ship until it was obscured behind Davis’s body—and his rifle. The ship was rising too fast, McKellen realized. Prewitt’s detonators wouldn’t ignite in time to stop it. It seemed that the little turd hadn’t planned for every contingency after all. It was up to McKellen now.

Summoning the last of his strength, he ground his teeth, reaching for Davis’s rifle. The ship’s hull rose higher as the platform lifted toward the ceiling, heading for the top floor and the world beyond. His fingers slipped over the rifle’s muzzle again and again, the weapon just out of reach. Preparing himself for the shot of pain that would follow, McKellen clenched his jaw, and his complexion reddened as he pushed himself forward. The pain was excruciating, but he only needed a few more inches.
